About Flan!!

Illustration of Flan character by flanwcaramel
Hello, my name is Vinny, although I go by the alias 'Flan' irl. I like to engage in hobbies like drawing, games, and just recently web design! Outside of my hobbies, i also study biotechnology and a little bit of pharmacology-though I am not an expert at it yet haha-!
I am Vietnamese-American (viet kieu) by the way! My parents were born in Vietnam and I was born in the U.S., which makes me 2nd-generation! My vietnamese skills are pretty lacklustered compared to those around me due to my time in America. However, I can still read, write, and speak vietnamese to an extent.

About My Art Journey/Potential Tips for Artists

If I'm going to be honest, I don't exactly know when I technically started drawing, but I can tell you that I took art seriously around October of 2022. Before that, I drew a lot in school as a way to pass time in class. I also consumed a lot of art by my favorite artists at the time like Rinotuna! I was heavily inspired by what I saw and wanted to make art like them, so I began with a piece of paper, a pencil, and an eraser to draw with.
During the time I started drawing, my drawings were abhorrent-at least in my eyes-. The anatomy drawings that I would do just for it to look atrocious made me crumble in the inside. I was really close to quitting because it wasn't at my level of expectations. It was at the moment I realized that art is not supposed to be easy, and the only way to get better is to just push through the struggle.
Eventually I wanted to experiment with different mediums, so I bought myself a tablet and got Procreate (probably the best decision I did to help myself). It was very hard adjusting to Procreate since I only drew traditionally at the time.
I still didn't make art that I was happy with until August of 2023, when I made my first piece I genuinely cared about. Since then, it has only been up from there. I'm constantly learning new things and applying them to my art, which have been the best thing to me. Of course, I have a long way to go haha. I'm not a master nor do I proclaim myself to be, however, I know enough that I can talk from experience.
To anyone struggling with art like I did in 2022-2023, please push through and keep going. Expect ups and downs, ebbs and flows, and optimism and pessimism, because that is what art is about. Never forget to have fun with art because that's what keeps you going.
